About Francis Wood Designs
Francis Wood Designs is a small woodworking shop in Metamora, Illinois, run by Douglas Francis.
How it started
Douglas started woodworking about 20 years ago. He wasn't happy with the furniture he could find, and he had always loved building and making things, so he started building his own. For about the last six years he has been making pieces to sell. By day, he works as a cybersecurity executive.
The shop
Every piece is made in his own shop in Metamora. He is a hybrid woodworker: traditional power tools and hand tools work alongside a CNC machine and a laser engraver. Most pieces are walnut, maple and cherry, with oak and exotic hardwoods such as padauk and purpleheart. His wife helps in the shop and often turns pieces on the lathe for the markets.
What we make
Cutting boards and kitchen tools, lathe-turned pieces such as wine stoppers, bowls and segmented dishes, ring dishes and trays, gifts, signs and furniture. Many pieces are one of a kind.
Custom work
The favorite jobs are the ones that become part of someone's story, like a custom sign for a wedding. If you have an idea, start a custom order.
